ST. PAUL, Minn., Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Organizers of Minnesota's weekend Oysterfest said an estimated 24,000 oysters -- 14 different varieties of five species -- were eaten raw by revelers.

Russell Klein, chef for St. Paul's Meritage restaurant, which hosted the fest, said about 1,300 people consumed the raw oysters during the Sunday event, the St. Paul Pioneer-Press reported Monday.

"It's a celebration of the bivalve," Klein said. "We turn Meritage into kind of a New England seafood shack for the day."
