LAS VEGAS, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- The Flamingo casino in Las Vegas said two brown pelicans injured in fishing lines have found a new home at the casino's Wildlife Sanctuary.
Robin Matos, the resort's wildlife manager, said the birds, which were rendered flightless by their injuries and received treatment from the Pacific Wildlife Project, were obtained by the casino after they were determined to be too wounded to return to the wild, the Las Vegas Sun reported Wednesday.
Matos said the Wildlife Sanctuary has a perching dock and a misting system for the pelicans, which have been named Bugsy and Virginia after casino founder Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel and his girlfriend, Virginia Hill.
The pelicans join about 500 other animals at the sanctuary, including flamingos, swans, ducks, guinea fowls and fish.
