Judge tosses cinema snack suit

LIVONIA, Mich., Sept. 18 (UPI) -- A lawyer for a Michigan man who lost his lawsuit alleging snack price gouging at movie theaters said he advised his client to buy a subscription to Netflix.

Circuit Judge Kathleen Macdonald ruled in a 45-minute hearing Friday to dismiss the lawsuit Jason Thompson brought against an AMC Theater in Livonia, saying the Michigan Consumer Protection Act does not apply to businesses regulated by other laws, the Detroit Free Press reported Tuesday.

"There's not much hope that the Court of Appeals or the Michigan Supreme Court will wake up and say their previous rulings have completely eviscerated the Michigan Consumer Protection Act," said Thompson's lawyer, Kerry Morgan of Wyandotte.

Morgan said his client likely will not appeal the ruling.

Thompson had alleged the movie theater was violating the law by overcharging customers for concessions.

"I told my client to buy a subscription to Netflix for the price of a bag of popcorn and a drink and vote with his feet and his pocketbook," Morgan said.

Town plots restoration of Gettysburg map

HANOVER, Pa., Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Officials in a Pennsylvania town said they are hoping to bolster tourism with a nearly 50-year-old electric map illustrating the Battle of Gettysburg.

Developer Scott Roland, working together with Hanover Chamber of Commerce official Gary Laird, placed a winning $14,010 bid for the 12-ton electric map. The map receive new electronic lights and its asbestos coating will be encapsulated before going on display next year, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Tuesday.

"This map is a piece of history, and a lot of people around here wanted to see it saved," Hanover Mayor Ben Adams said. "Everybody remembers the electric map. There should be a whirlwind of publicity."

Laird said the map will also receive an "annex" depicting the Battle of Hanover.

Officials said they are hoping the map will attract tourists who head to Gettysburg next summer for the 150th anniversary of the famous Civil War battle, often cited as the turning point in the battle against the Confederacy.

12-15 foot python captured in Illinois

WAUKEGAN, Ill., Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Authorities in Illinois said a landscaper working across from a Lake Michigan beach discovered a 12-foot to 15-foot Burmese python.

Waukegan Police Lt. Edward Fitzgerald said the yellow snake was spotted by a man trimming bushes Monday near Waukegan Municipal Beach and the reptile was captured without incident by Animal Control officers, the Chicago Sun-Times Media Network reported Tuesday.

"It was a little lethargic, because it's been cold out and they're cold-blooded. It wasn't aggressive at all," Fitzgerald said.

He said the snake, which he said was likely abandoned by its owner, "kind of livened up a little bit" after being taken to the Wildlife Discovery Center in Lake Forest.

Fitzgerald said the snake is being treated for an unspecified illness at the discovery center.

Couple arrested after highway sex

YULEE, Fla., Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Police in Florida said they arrested a couple accused of using a gun to threaten a motorist who spotted them having sex behind the wheel.

The Nassau County Sheriff's Department said Suzanne Welker, 31, was "naked and could be seen clearly by everyone in the area" around 3 p.m. Sunday in a moving vehicle near the Nassau County line when she climbed into the lap of the driver, Ernest Felix Gonzales, 27, and began having sex, The (Jacksonville) Florida Times-Union reported Tuesday.

A nearby motorist, Louis Carr, 24, told deputies Gonzalez showed down when he realized people were watching and pulled his vehicle up behind Carr's pickup truck.

Carr said Gonzalez attempted to run him off the road and into a guardrail while he was on his way to his father's restaurant and bar on U.S. 17 in Yulee.

Carr said Gonzalez and Welker got out of their vehicle in the parking lot of the restaurant and Welker was holding a gun. He said she pointed the weapon at a female employee who said guns were not allowed in the eatery.

The couple left when a witness said police were being called and officers arrested the pair on charges of indecent exposure and aggravated assault at their home.
