McDonald's fixes Hmong billboards

ST. PAUL, Minn., Sept. 13 (UPI) -- Hmong-American experts in Minnesota said a pair of McDonald's billboards that initially bore only gibberish have been corrected.

Lee Pao Xiong, director of the Center for Hmong Studies at Concordia University, said the St. Paul billboards, which were originally erected in late August, originally read as gibberish in Hmong due to spaces being left out, but they have now been corrected to read messages that translate as "Will help wake you up" and "Will give you strength on the go," the St. Paul Pioneer-Press reported Thursday.

"The translation is correct and reflects the intent of the message," Lee Pao Xiong said.

The billboards, McDonald's first foray into advertising in the Hmong language in the United States, are scheduled to be up for about four weeks.
