MORRISTOWN, N.J., Sept. 10 (UPI) -- Organizers of the Gran Fondo bike ride in New Jersey said the more than 1,800 riders made it the largest single bicycle event in the state's history.
Event organizer Marty Epstein, owner of Marty's Reliable Cycle, said more than 1,800 riders registered for Sunday's event in Morristown but exact attendance figures were not immediately available, NJ.com reported Monday.
Epstein said the event benefited local charities including the Seeing Eye, which trains seeing-eye dogs for the blind, Homeless Solutions, which finds shelter for the homeless, and environmental non-profit Grow It Green Morristown.
Michelle Barlak, a spokeswoman for the Seeing Eye, said the group expected to raise about $100,000 from the event and Grow It Green co-founder Samantha Rothman said her group also expects to receive several thousand dollars.
"It's just a great event," Rothman said.
