DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Police in Florida said a man who unsuccessfully tried to rob a Subway restaurant first had to ask for a pen to write his demand note.

Daytona Beach police said Charlie Boggess, 22, walked into the Subway just prior to 11:30 p.m. last Friday and asked the cashier for a pen, The Daytona Beach News-Journal reported Friday.

Boggess allegedly sat down in a booth and wrote his note, waiting for other customers to leave before handing it to the cashier. Police said he claimed to have a gun and demanded the clerk open the register, but the worker said she couldn't and told the man she needed the help of another employee in the back of the store.

However, the worker instead pressed the alarm and Boggess fled the shop on foot when the telephone rang.

Boggess was arrested the following day by an officer who recognized him from descriptions. He allegedly told police he attempted to rob the store because he needed money to fund his crack cocaine habit.

"They (officers) found the note he had written at the Subway," Police Chief Mike Chitwood said.
