KANSAS CITY, Mo., Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney leads President Barack Obama among U.S. voters who travel regularly, a poll released Wednesday showed.

The survey of 2,232 active travelers -- conducted July 27 through Aug. 6 by marketing services firm MMGY Global -- found 37 percent registered Republicans, 35 percent registered Democrats and 23 percent independents.

More than 80 percent said they planned to vote in the November election and favored Romney 49 percent to 42 percent for Obama, but fewer than half of all eligible voters actually voted in 2008, MMGY Global said in a release.

Romney was favored by 58 percent of travelers who live in the South and 47 percent of those from the Northeast. Obama led with 48 percent in the West and Midwest.

The survey found 32 percent of active travelers said they would "take substantially fewer leisure trips," and 22 percent would "take somewhat fewer leisure trips," if income tax cuts enacted during the administration of former President George W. Bush are allowed to expire on schedule at the end of this year.

Thirty-eight percent said allowing the lower rates to expire would not affect their future travel plans.

The poll's margin of error is 3 percentage points.
