ASHEBORO, N.C., Sept. 2 (UPI) -- A gorilla gave birth at the North Carolina Zoo, making this the second gorilla to be born at the zoo within a month, officials said.

The male gorilla was born Friday and was on exhibit with his mother, Olympia, Saturday morning, The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer reported.

Zookeepers said the baby, who has not yet been named, was born about two hours after they noticed Olympia was going into labor.

Olympia appears to be providing excellent care for her first born, zookeepers said.

On August 4, another gorilla at the zoo, named Jamani, birthed a healthy male, whom zookeepers named Bomassa.

Bomassa was the second gorilla to be born at the North Carolina Zoo; the first was in 1989, when a male, Kwanza, was born. Kwanza was transferred to Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo in 1998.
