Police: Robber left his ID behind

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Police in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, said they were searching for a man who left his ID at a BP gas station after allegedly robbing the station.

Investigators said Rodney Peterson allegedly robbed the station around 9 p.m. Saturday while armed with a broken bottle, WEWS-TV, Cleveland, reported Monday.

Police said Peterson inadvertently left his ID on the counter when he fled the station.

Bus driver sings opera for passengers

NEW YORK, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- A New York bus driver who took up opera singing about 15 years ago said he has been belting out tunes for passengers on request.

Christopher Dolan, who said he did not discover his singing voice until he was in his 40s, said he started serenading passengers after a regular noticed the sheet music he studies on his breaks and asked him to give her a sample, the New York Daily News reported Monday.

"She loved it," Dolan said. "Now, every time she gets on the bus, she asks, 'What are you going to sing for me today?'"

Since he began singing, Dolan has become a staple performer at events like the Metropolitan Transit Authority's Sept. 11, 2001, memorial ceremony.

"Like many MTA employees, bus operator Dolan commands talents beyond those normally called upon to perform his daily work assignment," MTA spokesman Charles Seaton said. "But aside from his vocal gifts, he has the type of personality and customer relations skills that make one of the city's more demanding jobs seem easy."

Oldest living person turns 116

WALTON, Ga., Aug. 27 (UPI) -- A Georgia county celebrated the 116th birthday of the world's oldest living person -- the eighth person to reach the age -- by dedicating a bridge to the woman.

Besse Cooper, who turned 116 Sunday, was honored at a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday for a new bridge on New Hope Church Road in Walton County when officials dedicated the bridge to her, the Walton (Ga.) Tribune reported Monday.

"The older she has gotten the more wittier she has gotten," said Cooper's son, Sidney, in relaying a message from his mother for the ceremony.

"I'm glad I gave them a reason to name it," he quoted Besse Cooper as saying.

Cooper, who was born in Tennessee on Aug. 26, 1896, is only the eighth person confirmed to have reached the age of 116.

Alligator found in Massachusetts canal

LOWELL, Mass., Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Police in Massachusetts said they found a 2-foot-long alligator swimming in a canal after receiving what they first thought was a prank call.

Calvin Thomas of Lowell called police after he and his twin 7-year-old daughters spotted the gator Saturday night in the Merrimack Canal, The Sun in Lowell reported Monday.

"They thought I was joking," Thomas said, referring to police dispatchers.

Sgt. Jack Cullen said he was shocked to arrive at the scene and discover the call had not been a prank.

Animal Control Officer Robert Pickard caught the alligator, which appeared to be uninjured, with a net and said the reptile will be taken to an exotic animals expert.

Thomas said the gator sighting saved an evening that had been marred by arguing between his daughters.

"I decided to take them for a walk ... and lo and behold an alligator in the canal," he said. "They got home and fell asleep talking about the alligator -- what a great night."
