COPENHAGEN, Denmark, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Residents of Copenhagen, Denmark, said they were trying to convince city officials to preserve man-made bunkers from World War II.

Sandra Hoj, who writes the Classic Copenhagen blog and is spearheading efforts to preserve the grass mounds -- built during the war to harbor civilians during aerial attacks -- said her Facebook group objecting to the city's plans to demolish the bunkers this fall has nearly 800 members, The Copenhagen Post reported Friday.

Hoj said supporters occupied the bunkers in an Aug. 18 demonstration, with a banner explaining their position.

Ayfer Baykal, the deputy mayor for technical and environmental affairs, said the project has been suspended pending further review. He said the decision was based on resistance from the public.
