14-foot gator pulled from Florida lake

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Aug. 23 (UPI) -- A Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission trapper said a 14-foot alligator he caught in Lake Talquin was the fourth to exceed 11 feet in recent months.

Lane Stephens, a contracted alligator trapper with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, said the most recent mammoth gator he pulled from Lake Talquin was a 14-foot behemoth that nearly matched the state record of 14 feet, 3 1/2 inches, The Tallahassee Democrat reported Wednesday.

"I didn't know it was as large as it was," Stephens said. "I knew it was an extremely large gator because the complainant had told me it was an extremely large alligator [that had come onto her property]. I didn't know exactly how big until we got him back to the boat landing and started trying to load him in my truck."

"Nobody is going to load a gator that size into their boat."

Police: Suspect blamed fake twin

BIG BEAVER, Pa., Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Pennsylvania State Police said a woman accused of taking complimentary items from a hotel room blamed a non-existent twin sister for the crime.

Investigators said Jennifer Brown, 31, who stayed at the Holiday Inn in Big Beaver Aug. 5, is accused of taking $206 worth of items, including two comforters, two throw blankets, four pillows, an alarm clock, a coffeepot, a basket and a hair dryer from the room she was staying in, The Beaver County Times reported Wednesday.

Troopers said they found Brown staying at the nearly Alpine Inn and the woman blamed her twin sister, Lisa Brown, for taking the items. However, investigators said they could find no record of the twin sister's existence.

Brown, who told troopers her sister was planning to return the items, was found to be in possession of the hotel's property inside her room at the Alpine Inn.

Brown was charged with theft and making a false report.

Man, 75, commutes on unicycle for birthday

MAITLAND, Fla., Aug. 23 (UPI) -- A Florida dentist celebrated his 75th birthday by riding his unicycle 5.1 miles from his home to his office.

James Rawlins said he wanted to do "something special" to mark his birthday Tuesday, so he rode his unicycle from his Maitland home to his office in Longwood at about 5 mph, the Orlando Sentinel reported Wednesday.

Rawlins, who began riding the unicycle about nine years ago, said he had to stop every few hundred feet during his Tuesday trek when he lost his momentum, bringing the total time of his commute to about an hour and 15 minutes.

"He likes to do different things," said Rawlins' wife of 40 years, Nicole. "He love challenges."

The dentist said he may consider repeating his feat.

"When I'm 80, I may ride it again," he said.

Man borrowed pen to write robbery note

DELAND, Fla., Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Police in Florida said a man who robbed a Dunkin' Donuts store first had to borrow a pen to write his hold-up note.

DeLand police said the man, described as about 6 feet tall with short blond hair and sideburns, borrowed a pen at the store shortly before 8:30 a.m. last Thursday and used it to write the note he used to rob the shop, the Orlando Sentinel reported Wednesday.

Police have released security camera footage of the man, who was last seen wearing a white T-short, tan pants and white shoes.
