Stockholm looks at topless sunbathing

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Swedish rules about beach nudity are too vague and Stockholm has become a prudish city because of it, a Swedish pro-nudity group says.

"It seems we're moving toward a more negative attitude toward the human body," said Johan Palme, head of Bara Kroppar, Swedish for "bare bodies," noting that the cities of Malmo and Gothenburg offer more nude beaches and more tolerance of nudity than Stockholm, Swedish news service The Local reported Friday.

While topless sunbathing can bring a fine in Paris or Barcelona, Stockholm's laws depend more on police interpretation of a fine line between morality and circumstance, the newspaper Dagens Nyheter said.

"The police can't fine someone on the spot for going around topless. It's a moral law and can therefore change as morals change," said Karin Rosander, spokeswoman for the Swedish Prosecution Authority.
