EDMONTON, Alberta, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Animal rescuers in Alberta said only nine of the more than 160 cats they removed from a man's home were healthy enough to survive.

Shawna Randolph of the Edmonton Humane Society said the homeowner is cooperating and rescuers are still working to remove cats hiding inside the home, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Friday.

"(We're) checking to see if the humane cat traps that have (been) set there have captured a cat and if so, bringing the cats back to the shelter," Randolph said.

"Most of the cats that have been removed have been skittish, but these even more so," Randolph said. "They are hiding in any nook and cranny that they can find inside the home."

The Humane Society said one of the rescued cats is ready for adoption while the others are in foster care.
