John Daiker, 38, of Rogers, who stands 6 feet, 3 inches and weighs 270 pounds, said playing defensive end in high school and college gave him the experience he needed to take down the robber -- who was armed with a handgun -- outside the Rogers store shortly after 11 p.m. Tuesday, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported Thursday.

"I've always thought if you could help somebody, you just do it," Daiker said.

Daiker put the teen "in a front headlock. I had his head and his arm, and I was squeezing him" until a police officer who was watching the store due to recent armed robberies at SuperAmerica stores arrived to help.

Phoenix mayor breaks nose at WNBA practice

PHOENIX, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton broke his nose in two places while running drills with the Phoenix Mercury WNBA team.

Stanton went up for a rebound against Nakia Sanford while running drills with the team Monday and took an elbow to the nose, breaking it in two places, TMZ reported Thursday.

"Injuries are just part of the game -- they're battle wounds," Stanton said in a statement.

Mercury Coach Cory Gaines described the incident as "hilarious."

"You can't script it any better," he said.

Auto workers stay cool with kilts

TULSA, Okla., Aug. 17 (UPI) -- An Oklahoma auto shop owner said he has embraced the shop's Irish theme -- and beat the summer heat -- by wearing a kilt to work.

David O'Brien, proprietor of O'Brien Auto Performance in Tulsa, said his shop plays Irish jig music during the work day and has a shamrock in its logo, so switching his summer garb from pants to a kilt four years ago seemed like a logical way to cool off in the summer heat, KOTV, Tulsa, Okla., reported Thursday.

"This is physically cooler than shorts," O'Brien said.

He said the mode of dress comes with its own challenges.

"Keep your knees down and your feet crossed, then everybody's happy and safe," he said.

O'Brien said worker David Denney followed his lead and also dons a kilt at work from May to October.

Police: Golf cart driver was drunk

TYLOSAND, Sweden, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Police in Sweden said they arrested a man seen drunkenly driving a golf cart with his elderly father in the passenger seat and another man standing in the back.

Tylosand police said officers in a patrol car spotted the unusual vehicle driving away from a restaurant and followed it to a home, where the driver quickly ran inside, The Local.se reported Thursday.

Police said the elderly man initially demanded of the officers, "What the hell do you think you're doing," but he took them inside to find his 34-year-old son when they threatened to get a search warrant.

The 34-year-old admitted he had been drinking at the restaurant and a blood alcohol test found the man was over the legal limit for driving.

The man was arrested and charged with drunken driving.
