Police dogs sniff out suspect in a kennel

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- A suspected Canadian truck thief in Saskatchewan has learned police dogs can sniff him out even if he hides in a dog kennel.

Early Wednesday, a Saskatoon police officer spotted a pickup truck that had been reported stolen, the Saskatoon Star Phoenix said.

The truck with two people inside was driving erratically and ignored the officer's signals to pull over. Instead, it sped off and the officer didn't engage in a high-speed chase.

There wasn't much need, as minutes later, the truck slammed into a house, causing significant damage but no injuries to the occupants, police said.

Two people were seen running from the crash scene and the canine unit was called in for a foot search, the report said.

Police dogs followed a scent for 20 minutes and found the suspect cowering in a backyard dog kennel.

Not long after, a female suspect was located hiding elsewhere in the neighborhood. Police didn't identify the pair, but said they face a raft of charges including auto theft, failing to stop for police and leaving the scene of an accident.
