DETROIT, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- A 6-month-old puppy is recovering after his rescue from a Detroit sewer by the Michigan Human Society, a Society employee said Friday.

The dog, believed to be a shepherd mix, was found at the bottom of the city sewer Tuesday after a passerby heard his yelps for help and alerted authorities, The Detroit News reported Friday.

"We don't know how long he was down there, or exactly how he got there. He's not in great shape, but he was definitely happy to be out of there," said Chris Ouwerkerk, the Michigan Human Society driver who assisted in the rescue.
