Romney arrival interrupts wedding pix

LAKEWOOD, N.J., Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Mitt Romney posed with fans in an Orthodox Jewish wedding party in New Jersey after members of the group tried to pursue him to a fundraiser.

The presumptive Republican nominee arrived at Lake Terrace, a catering hall in Lakewood, N.J., Wednesday afternoon just as the newlyweds were posing for pictures, The New York Times reported. Members of the party left the bride and groom and took off after Romney, only to be halted by a fence and Secret Service agents, the Los Angeles Times said.

Romney agreed to pose for pictures with the group.

There was also controversy about the speed at which Romney traveled to Lakewood, a community with a large Orthodox Jewish population a few miles inland from the Jersey Shore. Holly Bailey of Yahoo News, the pool reporter, said the candidate's motorcade somehow shaved more than 15 minutes off the hour-long drive from Newark International Airport and sometimes hit 90 mph.

The campaign denied Romney's car was traveling at 90 although it said the driver of the press van may have had to hit the accelerator to catch up.

Speeding politicians have been a sensitive issue in New Jersey since former Gov. Jon Corzine was almost killed in a high-speed crash on the Garden State Parkway.
