Beer line almost foils proposal

CHICAGO, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- A Chicago Cubs fan said his planned proposal at Wrigley Field went awry when his message on the giant screen came up while his girlfriend was getting beer.

Greg Altringer of Great Falls, Mont., said he planned to propose to his girlfriend, Erica Kresge, while they were in Chicago for the Cubs game Monday night, but the "Erica, will you marry me" message he arranged to have flashed on the stadium's giant screen came up while Kresge was in the beer line, the Great Falls Tribune reported Wednesday.

Altringer, who had conspired with fellow fans to capture pictures and video of the proposal, said he decided to improvise a more traditional proposal when Kresge returned with the beverages. He pulled his girlfriend into the aisle and dropped to one knee.

"I love you; will you marry me?" he asked.

Kresge accepted the proposal.

"Tears started coming out all over the place," Kresge said.

Altringer said there was "a little glitch in the plan, but it all worked out."
