CHENGDU, China, July 29 (UPI) --
A 20-year-old panda at China's Sichuan province panda research center gave birth to the center's first cub this year on the first day of the 2012 Olympic Games.
The male cub was born to Li Li at 11:20 p.m. Saturday in the Chengdu Giant Panda Protection and Research Center, Xinhua reported.
The birth came late in Li Li's maternal life, as the endangered animals live an average of 25 years.
Veterinarians at the research center said both the mother and cub were doing well after the birth.
