CENTRALIA, Wash., July 26 (UPI) -- Police in Washington state said they are trying to determine how a 13-year-old boy was able to get a tattoo without the permission of his parents.

The Centralia boy's mother, who asked not to be named, said her son got the 6-inch dragon tattoo while on a trip with a family friend as a reminder of how he survived leukemia, KING-TV, Seattle, reported Thursday.

"What he thought was a good thing, is now turning into a really bad thing, and it is not at all how he wanted it to be," the mother said. "It's done. I can't do anything about it."

The boy, who has been mum about where he obtained the ink, was reported to police after a friend's parents spotted the tattoo.

"I didn't want him to do that," the mother said. "I wasn't proud at all. It's an embarrassing thing, and it is a personal thing."
