ROME, July 13 (UPI) -- Italian swimming organization Aquatic Education said its research indicates nearly half of the country's residents are unable to swim.

The survey, carried out on behalf of Aquatic Education by the Peipoli Institute, found 40 percent of respondents don't know how to swim, compared with 41 who said they can stay afloat, ANSA reported Friday.

However, the group said 93 percent of those surveyed said they believe water safety is important.

ANSA did not give a margin of error, the dates the survey was taken or how many people were queried.
