Man clearing webs with blowtorch sets fire

CHICO, Calif., July 13 (UPI) -- A California man accidentally set his home on fire when he was using a blowtorch to clear his yard of cobwebs, his brother-in-law said.

Eiliya Maida was using a propane blowtorch to get rid of spiders in his back yard Saturday when he unknowingly set dry plants on fire, the Chico (Calif.) Enterprise-Record reported.

The flames quickly spread to the attic of Maida's home.

Maida's brother-in-law, George Basbous, said he noticed smoke rings from the top of the house.

"And that's when I went crazy," Basbous said.

Basbous called 911 and emergency responders were sent to the house.

Firefighters put out the flames, which did an estimated $25,000 worth of damage to the home.

No injuries were reported.

Surfing goats spotted in California

SAN DIEGO, July 13 (UPI) -- California beach-goers were surprised to see two goats riding the waves on a tandem surfboard in San Diego.

Goat owner Dana McGregor, from Pismo Beach, met up with tandem surfing duo Mark and Debbie Gale Wednesday to see if his goats, Goatee and Pismo, would get on a surfboard together, The Orange County (Calif.) Register reported.

"They look pretty happy. Thinking this is going to be a little bit easier than surfing with the wife," Mark Gale said of the challenge.

McGregor has been bringing the goats surfing for a while now, but has never put them on the same board. On Wednesday the pair of goats had a few rides together before Goatee, the older one, swam to shore.

"Oh my gosh. That was hilarious. I never thought I'd see the day," said surfer Po Carbal, 22. "Goats on a surfboard -- I've seen it all. I think it's probably one of the oddest and coolest things I've ever seen at the beach."

Va. man wins second lottery in 3 months

ARLINGTON, Va., July 13 (UPI) -- A Virginia man said positive thinking was his secret to winning his second $100,000 jackpot from the Virginia Lottery in three months.

Joseph Sylvester, who won his first jackpot in April, matched all five numbers for the Cash 5 drawing July 3 with the ticket he purchased from the 7-Eleven on South Fern Street in Arlington, WUSA-TV, Washington, reported Thursday.

Sylvester said he used Easy Pick, which uses a computer to randomly select the numbers for the ticket. The numbers were 11-15-19-26-27.

"It feels great to win. I guess the only advice I have is: Expect to win," Sylvester said.

He said he plans to continue playing the lottery.

Tom Brady stares down CVS customers

WOONSOCKET, R.I., July 13 (UPI) -- Customers at a Rhode Island CVS store said they were shocked when their opponent in a staring contest turned out to be Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

Brady, who taped his appearance at the Woonsocket store to help the company promote its "Unreal" brand of healthy candy, sat behind a curtain during the weekend while customers were lured to sit on the other side and prepare for a staring contest, WBZ-TV, Boston, reported Thursday.

Many customers immediately lost their concentration when the curtain was pulled back to reveal Brady as their opponent, while others gave the quarterback a harder time with the competition.

The video has been posted to YouTube.
