BRANDON, Miss., July 6 (UPI) -- Police in Mississippi said a convenience store robbery was foiled when the suspect's mother followed him into the store and put a stop to the crime.
Brandon police said Roy Mitchell, 22, of Flowood entered the D's One Stop Food Mart in Brandon Tuesday morning and pulled a realistic-looking fake gun on the store's clerk, ABC News reported Friday.
However, Assistant Police Chief Chris Butts said the crime came to an abrupt end when Mitchell's mother entered the store to do some shopping.
"The mother sees the commotion, grabs the gun out of the boy's hand and pushes him out of the store," Butts said.
Butts said the woman apologized to the clerk and said her son was just playing. She asked the worker not to call police, but the employee dialed 911 and the mother and son were tracked down in nearby Pelahatchie.
"I kind of feel like she's somewhat of a little hero," Butts said. "If the clerk had a gun it could have been real messy."
Mitchell was charged with one count of attempted armed robbery and jailed in lieu of $300,000 bond.
