Baby born at side of Conn. interstate

DANBURY, Conn., June 22 (UPI) -- Connecticut State Police said a couple on their way to the hospital for the birth of their son had to pull over and make the delivery on the highway.

A state police dispatcher said the couple called 911 early Thursday morning from the side of Interstate 84, between Exits 8 and 9 east of Danbury, and the baby was born at 6:59 a.m., before firefighters and EMTs arrived at the scene, The Hartford Courant reported Thursday.

Firefighters said the father, a radiologist, performed the delivery while the mother was on the phone with state police dispatchers.

The mother and child were taken to Danbury Hospital, where they were said to be doing well.

Thief repeatedly targets Reese's cups

LORAIN, Ohio, June 22 (UPI) -- Police in Ohio said they are searching for a man who stole $400 to $600 worth of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and chips from a gas station over several months.

Lorain police said the man has been coming to the Sunoco gas station on Oberlin Avenue during the past several months, usually after midnight, and running off with the candy and chips before clerks can contact police, the Lorain Morning Journal reported Thursday.

The most recent incident took place at 1 a.m. Wednesday, police said.

The suspect was described as a black man, estimated to be 18 years old, standing at 5 feet, 10 inches and weighing about 140 pounds.

Man charged for defrauding drug test

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., June 22 (UPI) -- An Illinois man was charged with defrauding a drug screening test after allegedly handing over toilet water instead of urine, authorities said.

Brian J. Uchwat, 29, of Schaumburg, showed up at the McHenry County Sheriff's Office to take a drug screening test Wednesday as ordered by his probation officer, the Daily Herald, Arlington Heights, Ill., reported.

Authorities said when it came time for Uchwat to take a urine test, though, he provided a sample of water he collected from a toilet.

The McHenry County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division was notified of Uchwat's test. He was then arrested and transported to the McHenry County jail.

Court Services Director Phil Dailing said any attempt by a person on probation to tamper with a court-ordered urine test is considered a serious matter.

Authorities did not say when Uchwat is scheduled to appear in court or why he was ordered to have a drug screening in the first place.

Man stuck upside down in tree

FAIRBANKS, Alaska, June 22 (UPI) -- Firefighters in Alaska said they were called to rescue a man who was stuck dangling upside-down about 25 to 30 feet up a tree.

The Fairbanks Fire Department said the 53-year-old man, whose name was not released, climbed the tree next to the old Ice Park site on Phillips Field Road for exercise because "it was something he wanted to do," The Fairbanks Daily News Miner reported Thursday.

The man said he used foot spikes and a belly belt to climb the tree and ended up stuck upside down when he leaned back to rest.

The Fire Department rescued the man using as platform/ladder truck.

"He had a cellphone on a lanyard around his neck and called his buddy who called 911," the Fire Department said in a news release. "It was suggested that when he does this in future he not do it alone ... have a buddy with him. He picked up his gear once medics checked him and walked back to his car. Everyone then went home."
