DANBURY, Conn., June 21 (UPI) -- Connecticut State Police said a couple on their way to the hospital for the birth of their son had to pull over and make the delivery on the highway.

A state police dispatcher said the couple called 911 early Thursday morning from the side of Interstate 84, between Exits 8 and 9 east of Danbury, and the baby was born at 6:59 a.m., before firefighters and EMTs arrived at the scene, The Hartford Courant reported Thursday.

Firefighters said the father, a radiologist, performed the delivery while the mother was on the phone with state police dispatchers.

The mother and child were taken to Danbury Hospital, where they were said to be doing well.
