California church told to quiet down

BEAUMONT, Calif., June 14 (UPI) -- A California church has been ordered to reduce its noise and refrain from using band music until it is fitted with sound-proofing.

Beaumont city officials responded to complaints from neighbors by ordering the New Life Chapel, located at 451 Seventh Street, to conclude services by 8 p.m., have members off-site by 8:30 p.m. and refrain from using amplified or band music until the facility is sound proofed, The (Riverside) Press-Enterprise reported Thursday.

The Beaumont Planning Commission decided at its Tuesday meeting to modify the church's permit with the conditions as well as ordering it to remove a patio added without city approval.

"From the complaints, neighbors are able to hear from inside their homes," said the city's planning director, Rebecca Deming.

George Lopez, a member of the church, said the congregation would abide by the city's decision.

Bear wanders into Alaska high school

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, June 14 (UPI) -- Police in Alaska said a small black bear was chased out of a high school when it wandered into the building through an open door.

Anchorage police officer Chris Mueller said some doors at the Bartlett High School were left open Wednesday afternoon because of ongoing construction projects, and the small bear wandered in through one of the doors, the Anchorage Daily News reported Thursday.

"She was shopping. Any trash can that had any food in it was knocked over," Mueller said. "She peed in the hall at one point. Another teenage ne'er-do-well, just a different species."

Mueller said school staff evacuated the building and police officers drove the bear away by banging on doors.

The bear fled into a wooded area, and a pair of state biologists hoping to fit the animal with a tracking device were unable to locate it about a half an hour after it left the school.

Norway to close 149 post offices

OSLO, Norway, June 14 (UPI) -- The Norwegian Postal Service said it will close 149 post offices in favor of smaller operations available at grocery stores.

Officials said they decided to close the offices due to a reduced demand for letter sending from consumers and the move will leave the country will only 30 remaining traditional post offices, The Norway Post/Hegnar Online reported Thursday.

The officials said the reduction in letters came along with an increased demand for package delivery with the increase in online shopping.

"Clients' changing needs forces Posten to make adjustments. Grocery stores can offer a service that is tailored to the client's need for longer opening hours," executive vice president Dag Mejdell said.

Mejdell said the move, which will take effect in 2013 and 2014, will affect about 1,000 employees.
