Bear adjusting after removal from Cape Cod

BOSTON, June 14 (UPI) -- The black bear that rambled to Provincetown appears to have adjusted to its abrupt move from Cape Cod, Massachusetts environmental officials say.

The bear was given a tag on one ear and released late Tuesday at an undisclosed location in central Massachusetts, The Boston Globe reported.

"MassWildlife biologists and environmental police monitored the bear overnight and reported the bear is in good condition," the state Division of Fisheries and Wildlife said Wednesday.

The animal was tranquilized Monday evening after being spotted in Wellfleet. Lezli Rowell said the bear, which had been in Rowell's back yard, wandered into deep brush after it was hit with a dart and environmental agents had to use chainsaws to get to it.

"He was still awake and aware, but he was not able to move the large muscles," Rowell told the Globe. "They were very gentle with it, they fed it water, and we were able to pet the bear. They just wanted to move him to an area where he can better find a girlfriend."

The bear is believed to have swum the Cape Cod Canal in late May. It wandered 60 miles to Provincetown and then back to Wellfleet.
