PONTCHATEAU, France, June 8 (UPI) -- A French woman believed to be the oldest in Europe has died only days after celebrating her 114th birthday.

Marie-Therese Bardet, who was born June 2, 1898, died this week at her retirement home in Pontchateau, in France's Loire-Atlantique region, Radio France Internationale reported Friday.

The Gerontology Research Group in the United States had Bardet listed as the oldest woman in Europe and the sixth oldest person in the world.

Bardet is survived by two children, ages 90 and 88, as well as seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

The current oldest living person as listed by the Gerontology Research Group is Besse Cooper of the United States, who was born in August 1896.
