NANJING, China, May 11 (UPI) -- Italian automaker Ferrari apologized to Chinese officials after a publicity stunt left skid marks at a popular historical site.

A Chinese distributor for Ferrari paid $12,800 for a half a day of exclusive use of the Zhonghua Gate Tower in Nanjing and the time was used to film a special-edition Ferrari 458 Italia sports car performing stunts including doughnuts and wheel spins on the ramparts of the 600-year-old site, Sky News reported Friday.

Ferrari apologized for the stunt, which left skid marks all over the historical site, and said it was a dealership employee who decided to have a driver perform the stunts. The company said local officials gave permission for the car to be filmed while it was parked along the wall.

The company said it is working with local officials to repair damage to the historical site.
