City orders end to 24 years of house renos

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, May 9 (UPI) -- Taking 24 years to renovate a house with no end in sight has led the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba, to give its owner a month to clean up his property.

Daniel Old got building permits to construct the house in April 1988 and a two-story box-like structure began to take shape. In the years since, scaffolding was erected and protrusions were added to the building. Various rickety sheds and other outbuildings were also built on the property, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said.

Neighbors had filed numerous complaints about construction material falling off the house onto their properties, and Old was ordered to tear down the sheds erected without a permit.

He appealed to a city committee Tuesday, but that backfired when he was ordered to complete all the renovations within three weeks, the Winnipeg Free Press said.

An engineer was scheduled to inspect the house to see if it meets building codes, the reports said.

Old offered no reason for taking so long with the renovation project.
