Woman hopping over grasshopper in beans

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, May 2 (UPI) -- A Canadian woman who opened a can of green beans to find a blanched grasshopper staring at her says she's swearing off generic, no-name products.

Krystal Boyce-Gaudreau was preparing Sunday dinner for her family in Winnipeg, Manitoba, when she opened the can and was taken aback, the Winnipeg Free Press reported.

"I look inside the can, only to see this bright red 'thing' looking up at me," she said. "I fish it out of the can with my finger, only to realize it's the top 1-1/2 inches of a grasshopper. Disgusting!"

She filed a complaint Monday with manufacturer President's Choice, a division of supermarket giant Loblaws, and said she was disappointed with the response.

Boyce-Gaudreau said she was told grasshoppers live in bean fields and are the same color as the beans. The processing plant uses a red laser to scan beans for foreign objects, but sometimes they slip through, she was told.

The company also told her the top half of grasshoppers turn red when blanched, similar to shrimp and lobster.

That led her to wonder about the other half of the insect that didn't turn red.

"My concern is someone got the bottom half in another can and maybe they ate it," she told the Free Press.
