BARCELONA, Spain, May 1 (UPI) -- Authorities in Barcelona, Spain, said a group of six tourists spent 7 hours trapped on the viewing platform of the Columbus monument when the elevator failed.
The Barcelona City Council released a statement Tuesday saying the tourists became trapped atop the 197-foot-tall platform at 10 a.m. and technicians were unable to repair the elevator, Think Spain reported Tuesday.
Firefighters attempted a rescue with a helicopter, but they were unsuccessful. Rescuers then built a crane with a cabin to rescue the tourists, and they were all safely back on the ground by 5 p.m., authorities said.
