Tweets use code to leak French poll data

PARIS, April 23 (UPI) -- The head of France's polling commission said he will seek punishment for anyone who revealed exit poll data on Twitter prior to an embargo on reporting results.

Twitter users skirting Sunday's 8 p.m. embargo referred to incumbent President Nicolas Sarkozy, of the right-wing Union for a Popular Movement party, as "Tokaji," a Hungarian wine, and "Rolex" as a result of his well-off public image, while challenger Francois Hollande was referred to as "Gouda," after the cheese made in Holland, The Local.fr reported Monday.

"Dutch cheese at 27 Euros, Tokai wine at 25 Euros," some tweets read.

Jean-Francois Pillon, head of the polling commission, said he will investigate and seek to charge anyone who leaked polling data while the embargo was still in place.
