CHICAGO, April 23 (UPI) -- Chicago police said an alleged minivan thief attempted to evade arrest by jumping through a window into his home and pretending to be asleep.

The police report of the incident said officers attempted to pull over a Pontiac Montana minivan after it ran a stop sign on the city's South Side around 9 p.m. Friday and discovered the van, which did not stop, had been reported stolen Wednesday, the Chicago Tribune reported Monday.

Police said the man allegedly abandoned the vehicle in a vacant lot and ran to his house where he jumped into the open front window and ran to a bedroom, then pretended to be asleep.

The man, who gave various different names to officers, was addressed in Cook County court Sunday as "John Doe" and charged with criminal trespass to a vehicle, obstruction and various traffic offenses. His bond was set at $15,000.
