HAMILTON, Ontario, April 21 (UPI) -- Viewers of a morning news show in Hamilton, Ontario, were startled and some of them outraged when they suddenly found themselves viewing explicit gay sex.

Mike Katrycz, news director of CHCH, said the station was an innocent victim of a mistake by a cable-repair crew, The Hamilton Spectator reported. Workers apparently accidentally spliced the gay pornography into the CHCH feed while repairing a broken cable Thursday night.

Joey Stewart told the Spectator his dentist turned on CHCH to give him something to look at while he waited for a crown to harden Friday morning.

"It's surreal. I knew right away that something was up," Stewart said. "Not every day in the dentist's office do you sit up and see -- you know -- that."

Katrycz said the station has apologized to its viewers, even though it was not responsible.

"We're very disturbed," he said.

John MacNab, head of the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council, said "just about anything goes" after 9 p.m. if stations have the proper icons and advisories for adult content. But he said CHCH will not be penalized if an investigation determines it was not to blame for the error.

In 2006, the council determined a Toronto TV station was to blame for accidentally airing an infomercial for a phone-sex line at 3 p.m. instead of 3 a.m., MacNab said.
