ATHENS, Ala., April 18 (UPI) -- An Athens, Ala., revitalization group said the city will pay homage to its namesake and pay tribute to fried foods with its first Athens Grease Festival.
The Spirit of Athens group said it is still gathering ideas for the inaugural festival, scheduled to begin Sept. 29, The Athens News-Courier reported Wednesday.
"We wanted to have the fried food, but also celebrate the Greek origin of our name," said Trisha Black, executive director of the Spirit of Athens.
"We're having so much fun with it and it's going to be a fun event to work on. I know I can't come up with all the ideas and I'm trying to reach out to some folks who will want to embrace it."
Black said current plans include having several vendors for various fried foods and some possible ideas include an opening ceremony and live music.
