FOLSOM, Calif., April 17 (UPI) -- Barking dogs led police to an escaped prisoner who had been missing from California State Prison in Sacramento for 24 hours, officials said.

Folsom police caught up with Marco Cabrera, 32, Monday evening after two Labradors chased him into the bed of a pickup truck, The Sacramento Bee reported. The barking led the dogs' owners to discover the man on their property.

Prison authorities noticed Cabrera was missing from the minimum support facility Sunday during a 9 p.m. head count, the newspaper said.

Because the facility is outside the secure perimeter of the prison's maximum security area, "we call it a walkaway rather than an escape," said Sgt. LeVance Quinn, spokesman for the prison.

Cabrera was serving a five-year sentence for assault with a firearm, transport and sale of marijuana, corporal injury to a spouse, possession of an assault weapon, possession of a firearm by an ex-felon and possession of ammunition by an ex-felon, the Bee said.

Cabrera attempted to steal a vehicle while on the lam, and will face charges of robbery and auto theft, police said.
