John De Cando, chief animal control officer for the city of Hackensack, said the black-and-white cow bolted from a slaughterhouse on River Street without any workers noticing around 8 p.m. Tuesday and was soon pursued through the city's streets by police and animal control officers, The Record, Hackensack, reported Thursday. Advertisement De Cando said he was eventually able to get close enough to the animal to tranquilize it. He said there were no injuries, but a police car sustained minor damage during the chase. The animal control officer said the owner of the slaughterhouse told him the cow is no longer destined for death. "The guy who owned the slaughterhouse promised me he will take it to a farm tomorrow," De Cando said.
