SALT LAKE CITY, April 11 (UPI) -- Elections officials in Utah said Republican presidential contender Newt Gingrich may be left off the primary ballot because his campaign's check bounced.

Utah Elections Director Mark Thomas said a representative of the Gingrich campaign turned in the filing papers and a $500 check in March but the state recently heard from the issuing bank that the check had insufficient funds, The Salt Lake Tribune reported Wednesday.

Thomas said his office has attempted to contact Gingrich's campaign using the provided phone number, but has yet to receive a response.

The director said Gingrich will not qualify to be on the ballot if the fee isn't paid by April 20.
