Rooster hangs out at fried chicken eatery

COLLIERVILLE, Tenn., April 10 (UPI) -- The manager of a Tennessee fried chicken restaurant said a rooster first spotted in the area three months ago has been making daily visits to the eatery.

Debi McCaffrey, manager of Gus's Fried Chicken on South Center in Collierville, said the rooster crosses the street nearly every day to pose next to the rooster on the restaurant's sign, The Memphis Commercial Appeal reported Tuesday.

"Every morning, you can hear him crowing coming down the street," McCaffrey said. "He crosses that street and just pecks around in the grass."

Neighbors said they are unaware of anyone in the area keeping fowl, which is legal in Collierville provided the birds are kept in coops.

Collierville Animal Services said workers have been trying to catch the rooster for months so it can be moved to a new home and protected from raccoons and other predators.

McCaffrey said she would like the city to adopt the rooster as a mascot. The city previously dubbed Amos the cat, a feline that lived at English Country Antiques until his death in 1981, as its official mascot and erected a plaque in the feline's honor.
