Trapped basset hound calls police

SOUTH HIENDLEY, England, March 28 (UPI) -- Police in Britain responding to a 999 emergency call with the sound of heavy breathing said they found a basset hound strangling on the phone wire.

Police in South Hiendley, England, said they responded to the emergency call Saturday night and found no one was home, but neighbor Paul Walker, 41, had a key and let them inside, The Sun reported Tuesday.

Walker, who said Steve Brown and his college student daughter, Lydia, 18, left him a key to take care of their basset hound later in the evening, said he found 2-year-old George on the floor of the living room with his neck tangled in the phone cord.

"He was absolutely terrified and could not free himself," Walker said. "I knew I had to get him free quickly so I just ripped the wire out. Incredibly you could see where his paw print was on the phone to ring 999 -- he literally saved his own life."

"When the police came into the room and realized what had happened they burst out laughing," he said. "They told me they had been sent out because of a 999 call in which the operator could only hear heavy breathing and gasping.

Lydia Brown said George most likely called the emergency number accidentally.

"He's not usually very smart," she said. "He's really dopey and just likes to chew socks."

The Grace Foundation, which took in the mother while she was pregnant with five puppies, said the litter was born two weeks ago and the runt, named Beyonce, was only slightly larger than a business card at birth and did not start breathing until cardiopulmonary resuscitation was administered, the World Records Academy reported.

The record-keeping organization said Beyonce, a Dachshund mix, weighed only 4 ounces and remained smaller than an iPhone after two weeks of life, making her the record holder for the world's smallest puppy.

The Grace Foundation said Beyonce and her siblings will go up for adoption sometime after May 3.

Woman: Lotto giveaway was an accident

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., March 28 (UPI) -- A million-dollar lottery winner in California who handed $100 to a stranger at a convenience store said she accidentally also gave him a $260,000 lotto ticket.

Emily Leech, who won a $1 million jackpot with a ticket she bought from the Liquor & Tobacco store in Mountain View in January, said she was aiming for an act of kindness when she handed $100 to a stranger in line behind her at the store prior to Friday's Mega Millions drawing and she later realized she had also handed him her ticket, which later won $260,000, the San Jose Mercury News reported Tuesday.

Leach said the clerk at the store told her the man returned Saturday and said she had purchased the ticket for him.

The state lottery commission's security department said the matter is being investigated.

"She said she had the ticket in her hand and maybe it got mixed in with the money she gave this person," said Alex Traverso, a spokesman for the lottery commission. "They're going to look at the video and see if she's the one actually buying the ticket. If no one else is in the picture, that puts things firmly in her favor."

Lottery officials said the man still had not come forward to claim the winnings Monday.
