THE WOODLANDS, Texas, March 22 (UPI) -- Authorities in Texas said scrap metal thieves are believed to have been behind the theft of two life-sized bronze deer sculptures.

The sculptures, a 400 to 500-pound buck and a 100-pound fawn, were taken from a large collection at the entrance to The Woodlands community, KTRK-TV, Houston, reported Thursday.

A spokeswoman from The Woodlands Development Co. said the buck, which left behind the stump of a leg attached to the ground, was believed to have been taken March 1 and the other statue, which is now only a platform, was taken last week.

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said it has not identified any suspects, but investigators believe scrap metal thieves were behind the crimes. Local scrap metal dealers said bronze currently fetches between $1.50 to $2.50 per pound.
