GLOUCESTER, Mass., March 21 (UPI) -- A Massachusetts paramedic who helped deliver twins in an ambulance said similar incidents are becoming more and more common.

Gloucester Fire Department Capt. Phil Bouchie said department paramedics picked up Amanda Knowles, who was experiencing contractions, Tuesday and headed toward Bevery Hospital, the Gloucester Daily Times reported Wednesday.

Paramedics Linda Hayes and Jeff Poole decided to pull the vehicle over in the breakdown lane near Exit 13 on Route 128 when it became clear they would not make it to the hospital in time. Bouchie and Tom Savage arrived as backup after the first baby, a boy, was born and the second child, a girl, was born on the way to the hospital.

Bouchie said the names of the children were unavailable but they were said to be doing well at Beverly Hospital.

He said fire department paramedics seem to be delivering an increasing number of babies in recent months.

"It's been happening more and more," he said.
