Event hall investigated for sham 'wedding'

SODERTALJE, Sweden, March 14 (UPI) -- Sweden's strict alcohol regulations may have been violated by party planners who threw a wedding reception without a bride and groom, officials said.

Police in Sodertalje said alcohol inspectors made an unannounced visit to the Panorama event hall Feb. 11 after suspicions were raised because the "wedding" required an entrance fee, The Local reported Wednesday.

The investigators found there was no bride or groom at the celebration, which included 280 guests and a live band. Authorities said Panorama had received permission to serve alcohol at the "wedding" and the investigators confiscated all the imported alcoholic beverages at the celebration when they suspected the terms of the permits had been breached.

The party was allowed to continue serving alcohol purchased from state-owned retailer Systembolaget.

Police said they are now investigating the venue and its owners for suspected alcohol law violations.
