NEWBERN, Ala., March 12 (UPI) -- Authorities in a west-central Alabama county said Monday they were checking out a report of a gorilla on the loose.

WBMA-TV, Birmingham, reported a dispatcher for the Hale County Sheriff's Office said sheriff's deputies were out helping Newbern police and fire crews in the search.

A gorilla was said to have been spotted near a store on County Road 61 in Newbern.

The nearest zoo is about 100 miles away from Newbern in Birmingham, ABC News reported. Birmingham Zoo officials told ABC the zoo has one gorilla and it was still in its quarters.
