WASILLA, Alaska, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- An Alaska high school said a sculpture some say resembles female genitalia will be left in place until surveys are taken later in the school year.

Principal Amy Spargo of Wasilla High School said the sculpture, which is comprised of a pair of overlapping Zulu-style shields, will remain at the school until students, parents and community members fill out surveys and a committee reviews the results later in the school year, the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman, Wasilla, reported Monday.

Meadow Lakes residents Jim Dault and Shala Dobson, the artists behind the "Warrior Within" sculpture, said one of the shields represents "pure thought" and the other represents "pure deeds." They said the overlapping of the shields symbolizes the warrior within all people.

However, the sculpture has been compared to female genitalia by many viewers and was temporarily covered up a few days after its Jan. 29 installation.

"Our next step is we're going to live with our art for awhile," Spargo said. "We're going to think about it, we're going to rest with it, we're going to be patient."
