MOTALA, Sweden, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- A 14-year-old Swedish girl who was refused the name "Tequila" by the country's authorities when she was born said she has finally won the right to the moniker.
Tequila Wikinghielm of Motala said Sweden's Tax Agency, which is given the power to reject proposed names if they are deemed potentially offensive or can cause discomfort to the bearers, refused the name when she was born, leading her parents to dub her Quila, but she has always referred to herself as Tequila, The Local reported Monday.
Wikinghielm said she was never baptized as a baby and was planning to have a baptismal ceremony before her upcoming confirmation. She said she decided to make a last effort at persuading the Tax Agency to let her be Tequila.
Wikinghielm said she sent a personal appeal to the agency explaining how she wanted Tequila to be her official name prior to the baptism and she soon received a positive response.
"I started bawling. I'll be framing this paper," she said.
