Police arrest fake Denny's manager
MADISON, Wis., Feb. 24 (UPI) -- Police in Madison, Wis., said they arrested a man who claimed to have been sent by Denny's corporate offices and made himself a meal in the kitchen.
Police said James Summers, 52, of Madison entered the restaurant around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and told workers he had been sent by the corporate office and was immediately taking over the position of general manager, WISC-TV, Madison, reported Thursday.
Workers said Summers began making himself a cheeseburger and fries in the restaurant's kitchen while the current manager phoned her supervisors.
The manager called 911 when she confirmed Summers had not been sent by the company and he was arrested while walking near the Denny's.
Summers told police the incident must have been the result of a paperwork mix-up, but officers said they confirmed he had not been sent by Denny's officials.
Police said Summers was also carrying a stun gun and did not have a permit. He was arrested on charges of fraud, possession of an electric weapon, disorderly conduct and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Poll: Pens most stolen in the office
OAK BROOK, Ill., Feb. 24 (UPI) -- Illinois office supply company Paper Mate says its national survey found 100 percent of respondents admitted to stealing pens from colleagues.
The Oak Brook company said its telephone survey of 1,000 office workers, carried out Dec. 14-27 by Braun Research, found 78 percent of respondents admitted to stealing pens by accident while 22 percent admitted to taking pens on purpose.
The survey, commissioned as part Paper Mate's campaign to stop thefts of its InkJoy pen, which it predicted will be the "world's most stolen pen," also found 70 percent of those polled cited pens as the office supplies most likely to go missing from their work spaces, followed by pencils and highlighters with 55 percent each.
The poll's margin of error was plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
Mich. state parks get official ice cream
LIVONIA, Mich., Feb. 24 (UPI) -- The Michigan Department of Natural resources has named a caramel apple ice cream created by a Houghton Lake woman as the official ice cream of state parks.
The department said judges, including three participants in the 2012 Outstanding Outdoor Kids program, met at a Meijer store in Livonia and sampled various ice creams Tuesday and picked the Pure Michigan Caramel Apple flavor as the official Pure Michigan ice cream flavor of Michigan state parks.
The flavor, which was created by Dawn Dummer, will be served to attendees at the March 25-27 Pure Michigan Governor's Conference on Tourism.
Dummer was awarded with free Hudsonville ice cream for a year, a one-week stay in a Michigan state park or harbor, a $1,000 Meijer gift card and various Pure Michigan merchandise.
"I've never entered a contest before other than bingo, but I had to do this one! It's about Michigan and I love Michigan -- it's my home state and I'm proud of it," Dummer said. "I'm just beside myself right now!"
Melting evidence endangers case
SALEM, Mass., Feb. 24 (UPI) -- A lawyer for two Massachusetts men accused of stealing the head from an ice sculpture said he wants the case dismissed after the evidence melted.
Attorney Marc Salinas said the case against William Hare, 47, and Rajendra Srivastava, 30, who were arrested on a larceny charge after allegedly taking the head from the dragon sculpture Feb. 12, should be dismissed after the head melted while in a Salem Police Department freezer, the Boston Herald reported Thursday.
Police said a faulty plug in their freezer led to the head, which had been court-ordered to be preserved until the trial, melting away into a puddle.
"The Salem Police Department is one of the best on the North Shore and I'm sure this wasn't done intentionally," Salinas said. "But it doesn't change the fact that my clients have a right to confront the evidence brought against them in court."
