WAIKANAE BEAC, New Zealand, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- A New Zealand man says he sold a bed made out of used beer bottles online for $3,000.

The bed, sold Wednesday, is comprised of 318 bottles and supports a single mattress, The Dominion Post reported.

The bottles are placed standing up between two wooden plates. They are illuminated by florescent green light.

TradeMe Web site user pen25 won the online auction with a bid of $3,000, exceeding the reserve price of $2,500.

Steve Sandvoss, who built the bed, said he came up with the idea while drinking beers with a buddy that resulted in a pile of bottles. He decided there had to be a better use for the glass.

Sandvoss said he collected beer bottles from his family and friends to make the bed.

"They [the bottles] were all moldy and disgusting. It took about 20 hours and two liters [about a half gallon] of turps [solvent] to clean them up," he said.

The project took him about a year to complete, Sandvoss said, adding he is sad to see it go.

"I really like the bed and I wouldn't mind just hanging on to it because I really, really like it. I wouldn't mind having it in my lounge, I think I'll get really emotional when I sell it," he said.
