Restaurant sells Valentine's 'Salamigrams'

PORTLAND, Ore., Feb. 9 (UPI) -- An Oregon restaurant is celebrating Valentine's Day by offering lovers the chance to have "Salamigrams" delivered to their sweethearts.

Olympic Provisions in Portland said customers can pay $75 for a three-stem salami bouquet or $100 for a six-stem bouquet and the gifts will be delivered between Feb. 11 and Feb. 14 by the lead singer of local band the Tumblers, who will serenade the recipients with his song, "Love Is Where The Meat Is," KPTV, Portland, reported Thursday.

The business said those who wish to deliver their salami bouquets personally can order them online and pick them up from the store.

City won't recognize man's masculinity

NEW YORK, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- A former Marine's lawsuit against New York says a hospital mix-up listed him as female on his birth certificate and the city is refusing to correct the error.

David Hassan, 29, filed a lawsuit in city Supreme Court saying the mistake on his birth certificate was not noticed until 2003, when he was denied a new ID by a clerk who noticed the error, the New York Post reported Thursday.

"I am not, nor have I ever been, female," he said.

Hassan's suit says he didn't do anything about the mistake at the time because he had to return to active duty and his mother attempted to have it fixed, but she "was advised that because this was a hospital error, a letter was necessary from Lenox Hill Hospital stating that the mistake on the birth certificate was the result of hospital error."

The suit says Lenox Hill issued a letter in 2007 saying the gender should be changed, but it refused to admit it made a mistake "for liability reasons."

"I was told by the personnel there (the Division of Vital Statistics) that without an admission of error by the hospital they would not issue a corrected birth certificate," Hassan said.

Connie Pankratz, a spokeswoman for the city Law Department, said officials "trust that an appropriate resolution can be reached."

A spokeswoman for Lenox Hill said the hospital is working to resolve the issue.

Kindergarten homework pictured gun

NEW YORK, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- A New York couple said they were shocked to see their 5-year-old's homework assignment included pictures of a gun and an armed robber.

Lawrence Gillman and Takiema Reynolds said their daughter, Amanda, brought home a worksheet from her kindergarten class at PS 201, known as The Discovery School for Research and Inquiry, featuring the pictures and requiring her to write "gun" and "rob" under the pictures, the New York Post reported Thursday.

"It was horrible," Reynolds said. "I was totally thrown off when I saw it."

"It's inappropriate for a kindergartner to have to learn that," she said. "It makes it seem like it (violence) is OK. It's not -- it's totally not."

A Department of Education spokeswoman said the teacher has apologized and the worksheet was not a part of the school's usual curriculum. The spokeswoman said the school's principal will be monitoring the teacher's future homework assignments.

Naked man rescued from LA radio tower

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Authorities in Los Angeles said a naked man was lowered from a downtown radio tower in a makeshift pulley system.

Police said the man scaled the 220-foot tower for unknown reasons around 4 p.m. Wednesday and began shedding his clothes while climbing until he was nude, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.

The man, who was said to be in his 30s or 40s and possibly an Arizona resident, was wrapped in a blanket and lowered to the ground Wednesday night by a rope-and-pulley system assembled by the Los Angeles Fire Department's search-and-rescue specialists.
